Certified Beauties: 3 Serious Reds To Open This May Long

Certified Beauties: 3 Serious Reds To Open This May Long

The May long weekend is the official start of BBQ season. This means it’s time to break out those expensive cuts of meat - we’re talking filet, ribeye, tomahawk, porterhouse, NY striploin - and watch the older men in your life light their hair on fire while trying to get the propane lit properly.

All fire hazards aside, this is the ideal time to bust out a few big reds to go along with that protein-heavy BBQ fare and celebrate the start of what is sure to be the most Bonnie-free summer in recent memory. Our Certified Drunken Sommelier™ Steven Lane has chosen a few special reds to crack in order to properly mark the occasion.

1. Stag’s Leap Petite Sirah

Perhaps not a grape variety on the front pages of the rolodex of some imbibers, Petite Sirah is a quintessentially American variety, known for its deep, inky colour and silky texture. Though of no relation to Syrah or Shiraz, it does indeed deliver the full-bodied, fruit-forward profile that is complemented beautiful by some toasty oak characteristics. It just tastes expensive. The best part is that it can be had for a sub-$50 price tag, while punching well above its weight.

2. Black Sage Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

The wines from Black Sage Vineyard come, naturally, from the Black Sage Bench on the east side of Oliver, BC. Perhaps more than any other part of the Okanagan, the Black Sage Bench embodies a summertime in British Columbia, with that late-day sunshine and heat, and vistas that make you feel like you’re in California or Italy or some other romantic location. In addition to the basic romance surrounding where this wine comes from, the wine itself delivers ripe black fruit, cedar, and graphite characteristics with firm tannins that are just begging for some marbled rare beef to smooth them out. Once again, the price point is a bargain at sub-$40, and you can feel good about shopping local.

3. Greenwing Cabernet Sauvignon

As a counterpoint to the aforementioned wines from California and British Columbia, respectively, one would do well to turn an eye to our friends just south of the line in Washington State. From the makers of long-adored Duckhorn wines comes their Columbia Valley project, Greenwing. Striking the perfect balance between the unapologetic generosity of California and the elegance of British Columbia, the Greenwing Cabernet Sauvignon delivers that ‘just right’ type of feeling for lovers of sizeable red wines: not too jammy and not too lean. The ultimate synergy between modern and classic, and a beautiful match for a celebratory occasion.
